Up at 4:15AM and into the big city to run the 2nd half of the NYC Marathon course with my fellow Fred’s Team runners. A good turnout of maybe 100 or so again. We started on 1st Ave. and 61st Street and ran over the Queensboro (59th St) Bridge into Queens and then back over to tackle the final 10 or so.
It was nice to get a lay of the land and notice the the slight inclines on 1st and 5th Ave. The park was packed with runners doing their final long runs with 2 weeks to go. Also a lot of fun ending at the finish line with the stands already set up. Did a decent pace and HR (77%max) considering it wasn’t at all a goal. 15 days!
Nutrition note of the day: candy corn passed as a surprisingly effective running nutrition item. I realized late last night that I only had one GU for today and headed out to the store with slim pickings for options. My eyes spotted the candy corn on a Halloween display and I remembered reading about it as an option somewhere…maybe Runner’s World forum. I figured what the hell…It’s only a training run and I won’t use it in the race, but seemed right for a crisp fall day. I’ve tried other candy on the run, but gummi bears, sweedish fish, jelly beans are all sticky and make them tough to eat while running for me. Add chomps and blocks to that as well. However, candy corn isn’t at all sticky and actually worked fine. Gotta love instant sugar in an easily consumed form :-)
A good week with an awesome end to speedwork on Thursday with the Yasso 800s session (posted here earlier). Time to taper now, as this week was 1 mile less than last and the long run was 6 miles less. Next week sees the taper really kicking in with 24 mile or so and a weekend “long” run of 8 miles…whooo! Now I just have to remember to eat well and get lots of sleep. LESS than two weeks to go!
I am running the 2012 ING NYC MARATHON with Fred’s Team to raise funds for critical cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Please consider donating to support my run and THANK YOU! Here is the link: http://ht.ly/arn7g
